EDGE Voices Support for Cooper Nuclear Power Plant License Renewal

Speakers at a public hearing Wednesday afternoon in Brownville all voiced support for the renewal of Cooper Nuclear Station’s license for another 20 years. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission hosted hearings in Brownville and Auburn.

cooperFalls City Economic Development and Growth Enterprise (EDGE) Executive Director Beckie Cromer spoke at the Brownville hearing. Cromer expressed EDGE’s unwavering support for the license renewal. In her comments before the Commission she said, “The Cooper Nuclear Station is an economic development gem that injects millions of dollars into our local economy by producing almost 800 jobs that pay more than double the Nebraska state average. The decommissioning of the Cooper Nuclear Power Station would result in loss of revenue and jobs in southeast Nebraska. Additionally, Cooper runs a very safe operation that allows Nebraska to offer a diverse portfolio of power to our citizens.”

Also speaking in support of the license renewal were Brownville Village Board Member Martin Hanson and Nebraska City Clerk Arnold Ehlers. Martin said the station is the largest employer in Brownville and is a partner with the community, including providing equipment, training and support to enhance the capabilities of the volunteer fire department. Ehlers said Cooper Nuclear has attracted a diverse workforce, transforming the area into a global community.

EDGE recently organized a tour of the Cooper Nuclear Station for Falls City area residents. “The tour was very informative and provided a better understanding of the day-to-day operations at the station,” said Cromer. “The facility was top notch, the staff was professional and knowledgeable and the safety measures in place for workers and the surrounding public exceeds benchmarks set by governmental agencies.”

The Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) – which operates the Cooper Nuclear Station – has applied for a 20-year extension of Cooper’s license. The original 40-year operating license expires in 2014. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will take written comments from the public concerning the license renewal through March 15.
